But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Matthew 6:30 ESV
Look around and see the breadth of God’s love and beauty in the world. The creation is God’s canvas to illustrate his tender care and compassion for all things. The beauty of nature is a living reminder of our loving God and his daily provision. Jesus continues to point us back to reality by opening our eyes to truly seeing the world, God’s creation, that is all around us. There is life all around us that is arrayed in a wondrous beauty that causes an emotional response in us. The beauty of the world around us is magnificent. Yet, we continue to miss the Creator of this beauty and his sustaining providence in all of nature. Jesus wants us to take a moment and just gaze at all of creation in wonder and let it draw our hearts to the Creator. To see the beauty of the world and have our faith deepened.
It’s an amazing statement if you think about it. I often want to make faith so complicated. I have to read the right books and get my theological dogma in alignment with the truth of God’s Word. I have to have a systematic overview and understanding of the Bible. This is all good and right, but I sometimes lose the simple wonder of what Jesus is talking about here. For all my studying and understanding of who God is and having a correct theological framework, I often miss the simplicity of learning from nature. The birds of the air, the lilies of the field, and the grass of the field all have something important to teach me about faith.
Jesus is calling out my little faith. My faith is little when I am unable to see even the basics of God’s character that are on display through nature. I struggle and toil to have a truly sound doctrine, but I stumble over the basic understanding that God will and does provide for his children. Nature shouts the compassion and mercy of God. Creation displays the moment-by-moment provision of the Creator. If he cares about the minute details of a blade of grass, how much more does he care about me?
The answer is immense and unfathomable. I truly can never plumb the depths of God’s love for me. I can never truly know the full extent of his love for me. But the humble… The humble see Jesus everywhere and in everything. All of creation becomes a rich inspiration to sing praise to the Lord. I can take comfort in seeing the provision of God in the mundane and understand that he will provide for me. He is providing for me. So with my little faith, I give thanks in humility. Trusting the Lord to provide my daily bread and reveal himself to me more and more each and every day.
